Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien

The ingredients of this cologne – grapefruit, cypress, Sicilian lemon, citron, aldehydes, Ylang Ylang – are lovely but not as distinctive as the bottle, which is made of Baccarat crystal at a price of $1,500. Launched in 1981 by Annick Goutal and Francis Camail, the cologne comes in versions for women as well as men, and it won the Fifi award (Hall of Fame) in 2008. Inspired by the Roman emperor Hadrian, it retails for $441.18 per ounce.

Aventus for Men by Creed

Aventus has risen to become Creed’s bestselling cologne even at $435 for 100 ml ($128.79 per ounce). The base notes of vanilla, ambergris, vanilla and oakmoss evoke a masculine woody experience. The top notes feature Royal pineapple and Italian bergamot. The floral middle notes are dry birch and Moroccan jasmine. Created by master perfumer Olivier Creed and his son Irwin, Aventus is housed in a distinctive black bottled featuring the emblem of Napoleon.
