Restaurant August

One of TripAdvisor’s 25 Most Romantic Restaurants, August oozes class without ever letting you forget you are in the personality-laden state of Louisiana. Chef Ross Dover hails from Houma, a small town outside NOLA, and his roots are evident.  The Contemporary Creole menu boasts dishes like a lacquered duckling and roasted Gulf swordfish, served within a historic 19th century French-Creole architectural wonder in the Central Business District. Mahogany paneling, a two-story wine room, and crystal chandeliers put diners on alert: Creole cooking is at its best with white-glove service.

Henry Howard Hotel

New Orleans is all about tradition and heritage, but every now and then it makes way for a newcomer like this luxurious boutique hotel. A 1860s mansion on Prytania Street was transformed into the Henry Howard in 2016, named for the architect who built it. During Carnival, it’s on the Garden District parade route, but it’s also an upscale retreat when bead-throwers get to be too much. The delightful old parlor and the sanguine courtyard exclusive to the Henry Howard’s patrons strike a calming note.
