Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1945: $23,000
An anonymous bidder at a Christie’s auction in London paid $114,614 for a jeroboam (about $23,000 for a standard-sized bottle) of Chateau Morton Rothschild. The 1945 vintage is considered to be one of the great vintages of the 20th century. Produced after the end of the World War II, winery owner Baron Philippe de Rothschild returned to France after fleeing to Britain. His workers had kept the wine in excellent shape; when he returned to oversee the harvest, his winery produced one of the world’s most expensive wines.
