Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection 2009 Seasoned Oak Finish

Woodford Reserve

Woodford Reserve has been making whiskey since the 1800’s. Their owner Oscar Pepper and master distiller James Crow established the roots for bourbon production: sour mashing, charred oak cask maturation, and copper pot distillation.

Woodford is still at it today, and their Master Collection from 2009 showcases their expertise in the age-old bourbon-making methods. The oak and spice in this batch are robust, with heavy notes of fruit jam, dark chocolate, and toasted almond. The finish is long and smooth with sweet butter and even some lemon custard. If you can find a bottle, it will run you at least $129.

Barrell Bourbon Batch 009

Barrell Bourbon

New on the bourbon scene are Barrel Craft Spirits. They’ve only been around since 2013, yet have quickly risen to the highest ranks of American whiskey. Just three years after Barrel Craft’s entrance, Barrel Bourbon Batch 009 went onto the market in 2016, and sold out almost immediately at $90 a bottle.

Beware the proof at 112, though it leaves nothing to be desired where taste is concerned, with notes of a wide range of flavors, including thick clotted cream and tropical fruit, and a warm finish of sweet caramel corn. This bourbon comes highly, highly recommended.
